Passport and border documents: what Ohio travelers actually need for Canada

Toronto is a four-hour drive from Cleveland. The trip is easy — the document rules are where people get caught, and an Ohio driver's license won't get you across.

The one thing most Ohio travelers get wrong

Your Ohio license won't cross the border — even a REAL ID

A REAL ID compliant license is for boarding domestic flights. It is not a border crossing document.

Some states issue an Enhanced Driver's License that does work at land crossings — but only Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington. Ohio does not. For Ohio residents that leaves the passport book, the passport card, or a trusted traveler card.

If you fly into Canada, the answer is simple: you need a passport book, every traveler, every age. Nothing else substitutes.

Driving to Toronto or Niagara

By road you have more options — the passport card is a genuinely good buy if you never fly internationally. It's wallet-sized, costs roughly half what the book does, and covers land and sea crossings to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

What to have ready as you approach the booth:

Traveling with children? Rules differ for minors, and a child traveling with only one parent or with another family may need a notarized consent letter from the other parent. Sort this out weeks ahead, not the night before — this is the single most common reason a family gets turned around at the border.

How long does a passport take?

Processing times move constantly, and they stretch during spring and summer. If a Canada trip is anywhere on your horizon, apply now rather than when the trip is booked. Expedited service costs more and still isn't instant.

Check current processing times at travel.state.gov before you count on a date.

Already have one? Check the expiration. Some countries require six months of validity remaining beyond your travel dates, and an expired or nearly-expired passport can send you to secondary inspection even for Canada. Look at the date today, not at the airport.
